Know the facts.

The Humane Society of the United States put out a great "fact sheet".

For those of you who are "numbers people", it is important for you to know the facts. If you feel bad, but don't know how to help, consider this - one person can make all the difference in the world to one animal whose time is running out.

Perhaps knowing this- your next best friend can come from a shelter.

"I adopted your dog today..."

I had to copy this article below, including this photo and poem. This is so unbelievably true, and it sincerely breaks my heart- and it should break yours too if you have surrendered your dog for a reason that was probably ridiculous like (I work 9-5)....so does half of America but we get out and walk our dogs after work?! Unfortunately, a large majority of  people out there are simply uneducated in what goes on behind the scenes and simply do not know these things!

The following excerpt, below this poem, was posted and credited to the Montgomery County Animal Shelter in Alabama, a state where "no kill" shelter's essentially DO NOT EXIST!!!!!

"Owner surrenders or O/S as these poor animals are coded, are those unfortunate animals who have been dropped off at the shelter for various reasons.....These animals, especially are the ones we advocates are scrambling to get adopted or pulled from the high-kill shelters. Why?....

Because Owner surrenders are 9 times out of 10 the FIRST on the list to be euthanized. The shelters by law have to hold strays for an average of 3 days to give owners a chance to find them before they are pts (put to sleep) That means when the shelter is FULL the Owner surrenders are already at the shelter taking up valuable space will be put down.

Sometimes, depending on the shelter these poor owner surrenders are pts(put to sleep) before the end of the day. And heaven forbid, food should be wasted on them. (Insert sarcasm mixed with a lot of sadness here.)

THINK ABOUT IT.

Extra Extra, read all about it! Nuts For Mutts Rescue's 1st Annual Fundraiser!

So, one of the rescues that I am very involved in is very new- still in our second year of existence. The wonderful thing is that in just two years we have saved so many dogs- the dogs on my site are just the ones that I have been able to document through my own foster experience! With rescue, (especially new ones that are not as established), there are SO MANY EXPENSES that are un-forseen that people do not realize. Since we were blessed enough to have a shelter donated to us- we now have to figure out how to pay to keep it up! This means everything from fixing the broken door at the entrance, making enough keys for all the volunteers to get in.... food/treats/bedding/crates for dogs, even includes things like cleaning supplies for when puppies have accidents or the electric bills for the window air unit to keep the place cool... (another cost).

The beautiful thing is when we ask people to help us in any way that they can, AND THEY DO!!!! We really mean that- anything you can do is appreciated... ANYTHING! We understand that not everyone can foster, or donate money, or do transport ... but other people find ways to get involved! One in particular are two previous Co-Workers (and friend's) that deserve some recognition for their hard work. Kimberly Schwenzer and Nicole Rongo. Nicole was one of the people who started this amazing Rescue and fosters dogs whenever she can. Kim still travels all the time for work so foster is really not an option for her- but MAN does she network. Always spreading the word, always cross posting on Facebook, and one of the sole reasons that this fundraiser is taking place.... She had an idea, she wanted to help, and damn it she is doing it!!! And you have to love her for that. She is persistent, she does not give up- and through any negativity or insecurity about this fundraiser not working- she did not care, and she will make it succeed!
So above, is the flyer for our first fundraiser ever. As you can see, it is Wednesday October 17th, 2012, and the website for our rescue is www.nutsformuttsrescue.com. For $75 a ticket, you are getting a full blown sit down dinner from start to finish and a fabulous place with not only fabulous food, but AMAZING views. It is going to be at a wonderful restaurant in Webster, NY called Hedges Nine Mile Point that people have been raving about for YEARS! This is again an example of how anyone can help in anyway- this amazing restaurant has agreed to participate by hosting this event for us and all of the proceeds for this dinner are going towards our rescue! We are going to be able to take in dogs with special needs, help the dogs we already have, and find ways to do MORE than we have, even in two years! You can check out their website at http://www.hedgesninemilepoint.com/ .
